ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sudha Murthy was born on 19th August 1950 in Shiggaon,Haveri in Karnataka.She recieved a bachelor's degree in electrical and electronics engineering, standing first in her class and receiving a gold medal from the CM of Karnataka.Murthy completed Master of engineering in computer science from IISC .Sudha Murthy began her professional career as a computer scientist and engineer. She became the first female engineer hired at India's largest auto manufacturer TELCO.She married N.R.Narayana Murthy. In 1996,she started Infosys foundation. Through Foundation she has built 2300 houses in flood affected areas. Murthy 's social work covers the health care, education, empowerment of women, public, hygiene, art and culture and poverty alleviation at the grass roots level.Murthy is a profilic fiction author in Kannada and English. She has published several books that espouse her philosophical views on charity, hospitality and self realization through fictional narratives. She received the R.K Narayan's award for literature in 2006.She won India's fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri

SUMMARY OF THE BOOK:

"Gently falls the Bakula "is the story of Shrikant and Shrimati who belongs to two hostile communities, whose families don't get along too well. A tree of Bakula separates the two homes. Shrikant aspires to be the school topper, but it is Shrimati who tops.Shrimati is fond of History so studies the subject and Shrikant decides to pursue an engineering degree from IIT Bombay. Love blossoms between them, but distance doesn't diminish it even a bit. The Bakula flowers are the attachment to her love letters, carrying the symbolic meaning that the fragrance of their love never go away,Shrimati turns down a research scholarship, offer just to get married to Shrikant.

Soon the bride leaves for Bombay to stay with her husband. Shrimati came to know that her mother-in-law have no affection for her;she intends to continue her studies but her mother-in-law put her off. In return she doesn't get even an iota of appreciation. Meanwhile Shrikant reaches the top management and their material well-being improves.Shrimati loneliness accentuates. Shrimati tells him that she cannot put with loneliness any longer nor she can live with artificial values which eulogies materialistic success. She makes it clear that she's not enchanted by the comforts he had created and she is leaving him to find fulfillment. She opines that divorce is an instrument of remarriage and hence not intrested in it.The novel ends with Shrikant looking back at his domineering self, and how cruel he was to his wife. He realizes that he was the cause for her departure, but his professional nature gets the better of him,at the cost of his personal life

I'll recommend this book to the one's who never read Sudha Murthy books and to the one's who love women literature.
