ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Ruskin bond was born on 19 May 1934 in Kasauli,India.He is an author of British descent. He lives with his adopted family in Landour,Mussoorie,India. When he was eight his parents separated and his mother left him. "Bond" had a complicated relationship with his mother whose was rarely there to offer him affection and they eventually grew distant His father's undivided attention helped him,but his father tragic departure left him lonely and broken. Later he moved to Dehradun where his grandmother raised him.He completed his graduation and moved to Delhi.Despite his lonely childhood, Bond developed an optimistic outlook on life. At the age of 17 he began to write his first novel.Subsequently he worked as a journalist. Later he relocated to a town in the Himalayan foothills. His articles were published in various magazines .Till now he has written over 300 short stories, essays, novels and over 30 children's books.The Indian council of education has recognized his role in the growth of children's literature in India. He was awarded Sahithya Akadami Award in 1992,Padma Shri in 1999,Padma Bhushan in 2014.

SUMMARY OF THE BOOK:

The "blue umbrella "narrates the story of a young girl "Binya" living with her mother and an elder brother "Bijju" in a small hilly village of Gharwal.One day she comes across some picnickers in the forest and she saw an enthralling blue umbrella. She instantly falls love with the umbrella. On the other hand the city people get attracted by her innocent beauty and the lepord claw pedant in her neck, she happily gives it to them in exchange for the blue umbrella.


The blue umbrella is so much beautiful that soon becomes a topic of conversation for villagers. Binya is on cloud nine and rarely closes it because it looks charming when it is opened. Ram Bharosa owns a shop. He is so much envied by the umbrella that he decides to own it .so he asked whether she will sell the umbrella to him.,but she refuses the offer, he felt bad and hired a boy to work at his shop. The boy being loyal to him steals the umbrella from Binya ,when she is out in the forest for collecting wood. Finally, the boy is caught by Bijju ,when the boy reveals Ram Bharosa's name behind the stealing, the villagers stop visiting his shop. As a result Ram Bharosa suffers his livelihood.

Binya feels sad about Ram Bharosa's situation and she regrets herself for her suffering, she donates her umbrella to Ram Bharosa and in return he gifts her a bear claw pendant which is considered the luckiest of all the pendants.
